Developing a Healthy, Balanced Child

There’s more to education than reading, writing, and arithmetic. Children need to learn how to control their growing bodies, deal with complex emotions, and navigate social situations.

Academic schools are great for educating the mind, but what about the rest of the child? Recent budget constraints have cut funding for physical education, music and art education, and many other “non-academic” disciplines.

Let’s look at some of these “non-academic” areas:

  1. Physical Fitness. Children need healthy exercise, but they also need to learn good eating habits to stay healthy, as well as gross and fine motor skills to develop their coordination and body awareness. Unfortunately, many schools don’t address these needs.
  2. Mental Discipline. It seems more and more children these days exhibit symptoms of ADD (attention Deficit Disorder), and with our short attention span society, they need a structured way to learn to focus or concentrate. Many recent laws have stripped the ability of public schools to enforce discipline.
  3. Emotional Self-Control. In many ways, the difference between a child and an adult is emotional control. Temper tantrums seem to come naturally to children, who have to learn over time that they cannot always get their own way, and must control their emotions in order to be considerate of others. Emotional education is not part of your average school curriculum.
  4. Social Confidence. Learning to deal with other people is a skill set that can be learned. Unfortunately, character education — the very foundation of treating people right – is not a proper academic subject.

The martial arts have centuries of experience teaching physical, mental, and emotional discipline. Students learn amazing physical skills. They practice mental discipline every day, learning emotional self-control. Most important of all, they are taught right from wrong, to develop outstanding character and personal leadership.

Hundreds of parents in our community have seen their children get a balanced education in our children’s martial arts programs.

5 Ways to Bring Your Life Back into Balance

Balance is a tricky thing: too much of this or too little of that, and OOPS! you are off balance.

In addition, human beings are complicated: We all have physical needs, intellectual needs, emotional needs, spiritual needs, and social needs. With all these aspects to our lives, it can be difficult to attain and maintain balance. Here are 5 ways to bring balance into your life:meditate

  1. Exercise Daily. Your body was designed to move. Exercise builds strength, improves circulation, endurance, flexibility, and overall health. If you exercise too little, you tend to get sick more often. If you exercise too much, you may injure yourself. The right amount of exercise keeps you healthy.
  2. Focus. Your mind is like a muscle, in that it can be exercised to become stronger and trained to perform better. Learn to control your thoughts by practicing focus. Focus on whatever you are doing – whether it’s work or play – to train your mind to perform better. You can handle stress better by intentionally focusing on solutions instead of problems.
  3. Calm down. Riding a roller coaster of emotions wreaks havoc on your life. You can control your emotions, or they can control you. Bystaying calm and centered, you can focus your energy in a positive direction.
  4. Count your blessings. When you compare yourself to others, it’s easy to see someone who has more. It’s also just as easy to see someone who has less. Be grateful for what you have. The secret to happiness is not getting what you want, but wanting what you get.
  5. Associate with positive people. As much as 80%of our happiness comes from others. If your friends are negative, angry, or unhealthy, you will tend to be negative, angry, and unhealthy. Why not choose positive friends who will encourage you to be healthy, focused, calm, and happy?

Most people are good in one area or another, but balance – by definition – means that one or two areas aren’t enough. You need to balance all areas of your life.

You will get great, healthy exercise, learn to focus your mind, calm your emotions, and appreciate what you have. Possibly the best part is that you will make positive new friends and role models, who will help you maintain healthy balance in your life.

Prevention is better than Regret.

How many times have you said, “Oh, I wish I would have ______.”

Sometimes it’s a small thing, like, “I wish I would have started my diet earlier.” Other times it’s a bigger thing, like, “I wish I would have stayed in school.” or “I wish I would have pursued my dream.”

Why didn’t you?

Sometimes you just don’t know what’s going to happen. Other times, life gets in the way. The saddest times are the times you knew better, but you didn’t do it anyway.

It’s sad but true that bad things happen to good people. A parent’s worst nightmare is that their child is missing . . . yet thousands of children are abducted every year.

As a responsible parent, what can you do to prevent it?

  • Educate your child on what to do and what not to do. But explaining isn’t really enough. Children need to practice, so they recognize the situation as it’s happening . . . not having to connect your words with live action, but recognizing live action as they’ve practiced it.
  • Your child needs to learn how to escape, and what to do after escaping.
  • In the worst-case scenario, you need to be able to give the authorities what they need to help find your child.

FREE Child ID Kit

In our martial arts summer camp, we teach children to recognize danger, to escape from danger, and we provide a FREE Child ID Kit for parents.

We also provide a free pamphlet on Child Safety to help parents get through the summer safely.

Prevention is much better than regret, and we want to do our part to prevent you from ever feeling the regret of looking for a missing child.

What will Martial Arts training do for me?

What will Martial Arts training do for me?

Martial Arts training will help you get in great physical shape and improve your mental and emotional health too!

How is training in the Martial Arts different from other exercise programs?

Hi, My name is Master Frank,

Martial arts training develops greater inner peace, and teaches you how to truly relax and reach your full potential.

Unlike other physical activities (sports, weight training, etc.), practicing the martial arts doesn’t necessarily require great physical strength, athleticism, youth, size, or weight for success.

Everyone learns and progresses at his/her own pace, regardless of age, and the martial arts develop the entire person—physically, mentally, and emotionally.

Part of the AMS Test School curriculum includes setting and achieving challenging but attainable goals, which builds the confidence to succeed under pressure.

We call this indomitable spirit.

  • Working out in a gym or playing team sports can’t provide the internal and external fitness that comes from the Martial Arts, and certainly won’t teach you valuable self-defense skills!
  • The Martial Arts improve cardiovascular health, endurance, strength, and flexibility.

Transform your body into a leaner, more muscular state, and wrap your mind around learning self-discipline, focus, and confidence—you can do anything you put your mind to!

Sincerely,

Master Frank
